Church Tour around Marlborough/Pewsey on Friday 22 April, led by John Osborne.

10 am: St John the Baptist, Mildenhall
“The best church in Wilts” – Betjeman; small village church of many periods: Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Early English, Perpendicular and Jacobean; its major charm is the complete Gothick furnishing of 1815-16.

11.15 am: St Katharine, Savernake, where we are offered coffee and tea.
Large estate church; built for the 2nd Marchioness of Ailesbury by T.H. Wyatt in 1861; stone spire; stone screens; much carving.

12.15 pm: St Mary the Virgin, Great Bedwyn
Large and cruciform of mainly 12th-13thc; transepts and crossing early 14thc; restored by T.H Wyatt in 1853-4; stained glass designed by Street and made by Hardman; monuments including one to Sir John Seymour, father of Jane Seymour.

1 pm Lunch: Please make your own arrangements. You are advised to book in advance or bring your own picnic. It will save time for us not to congregate at the obvious pubs in Great Bedwyn and Pewsey, but to drive to one of the local villages a little further afield. Below are a few suggestions:
– The Three Tuns at Great Bedwyn – 01672 870280
– The Plough at Shalbourne – 01672 870 295
– The Swan at Wilton – 01672 870274
– The Seven Stars at Bottlesford – 01672 851 325
– The Woodbridge at North Newnton – 01980 630 266
– The Waterfront at Pewsey – 01672 564 020
– The Millstream at Marden – 01380 848 490
– Honey Street Mill Café – 01672 851 853

2.15 pm/2.30 pm: St John the Baptist, Pewsey
Norman, 13-14thC; south chapel added by Street in 1861; Perpendicular west tower with fan vault inside; pulpit, lectern and stalls also by Street who restored chancel in 1861.

3.15 pm/3.30 pm: St Mary the Virgin, Alton Barnes
Anglo-Saxon in origin – shallow pilasters in the nave; brick chancel of 1748; good 18thc panelling; three decker pulpit; Royal Arms of James I; recent glass by Laurence and Simon Whistler.

The cost of the day will be £20, payable on the day.  Please enrol by email to Martin Knight
