FRIENDS TOUR OF CHURCHES IN SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE

ON SATURDAY 8th SEPTEMBER 2018 – TO BE LED BY CHRISTOPHER ROGERS

THE TOUR

One of our recent objectives has been, on occasions, to venture beyond the borders of our county and our next tour, carefully researched by Chris Rogers, will take us northwards to some fascinating churches in south Gloucestershire.  The outline is as follows:

Meet at St Michael’s Church, Duntisbourne Rouse at 11.00am.  A wonderful totally unspoiled Saxon church north of Cirencester.

Saint Mary of the Angels RC Church, Brownshill.  (Chalford, in the Stroudwater valley). Now closed.  Built by The Caroe partnership in an Arts and Crafts style and finished in 1937. Superb location.

Lunch at the Ram, Brimscombe. This is just a bit further along the valley side from Brownshill.

Holy Trinity Church, Minchinhampton. (Other side of the Stroudwater Valley. Fine church almost completely rebuilt in the 1840’s controversially). Re-rebuilt by Burges and others a little bit later in the 19th century and magnificently restored to full working order in 2017.

All Saints Church, Selsley.  About 20 minutes drive round the edge of Stroud.  Built for the Marling family (mill owners) using George Bodley as the architect. Morris and Co did every single window, probably the first commission for stained glass that ‘The Firm’ was awarded.  Talk by the parish who will lay on tea and cakes for us.  They really do cherish their heritage and so much enjoy showing it to others.

TIMINGS

Meet at St Michael’s Church in Duntisbourne Rouse at 11.00am. Other timings will be confirmed nearer the day
