St Michael, Aldbourne

St Michael, Aldbourne

This Grade 1 church with its massive Perpendicular tower stands above
the village green. There is Norman work in the chevrons of the south aisle.
The wooden roofs, the Jacobean pulpit, brasses, monuments and Clayton &
Bell glass should all be noted.

The Holy Cross, Ramsbury

The Holy Cross, Ramsbury

Ramsbury was the seat of the Bishops of Wiltshire from 909 to 1058 from
which period fragments of crosses remain. The Grade 1 church is of many
periods from the Early English chancel to the ornate Victorian south porch.
There is a Gothick organ, good Victorian glass and many monuments, the
most elaborate of which is that of 1682 to Sir William Jones, sometime
Attorney General.

St John the Baptist, Mildenhall

St John the Baptist, Mildenhall

Betjeman described this as “the best church in Wilts”. The Grade 1
building itself is of many periods. Its major charm is the complete Gothick
furnishing of 1815-6 reredos, matching pulpits, pews and panelling.

St Katharine, Savernake

St Katharine, Savernake

This large estate church in the woods with a tall spire was built for the Second
Marchioness of Ailesbury by T.H.Wyatt in 1861. It is built in the style of the
late 13th century with elaborate carving, stone screens and Minton tiles.
There is an interesting monument to the Second Marchioness by Gilbert.

St Mary, Great Bedwyn

St Mary, Great Bedwyn

This Grade 1 church is near the Kennet and Avon canal. It is large and
cruciform and is built in a mixture of styles from the 12th to the 14th
centuries. It was much rebuilt by T.H.Wyatt in 1853-5. It has Hardman glass
and many monuments to the Seymours and the Ailesburys.
