Malmesbury Abbey (St Peter and St Paul)

Malmesbury Abbey (St Peter and St Paul)

The Grade 1 Abbey was founded in the 7th century; St Aldhelm was the
second abbot. What survives is the nave of the great abbey church in
Norman and other styles. The great glory of the church is the Romanesque
tympanum of Christ in Glory in the south porch. Also note the vaulted roof of
the nave with its coloured bosses and the Burne-Jones window by Morris & Co.

The Holy Cross, Sherston

The Holy Cross, Sherston

This Grade 1 church has a fine late Romanesque arcade. There is also Early
English and Perpendicular work. The upper stages of the tower were rebuilt
1730-33. There are a number of monuments inside.

St John the Baptist, Little Somerford

St John the Baptist, Little Somerford

The Grade 1 church is mainly 14th century, although the tower is later. It was
heavily restored in the 19th century. The Royal Arms are those of Elizabeth I.
The woodwork is Jacobean and there is a contemporary painting of the first
four Commandments supported by angels above the screen.

St Peter and St Paul, Great Somerford

St Peter and St Paul, Great Somerford

This Grade 1 Perpendicular church is also situated by the River Avon.
The colourful east window of 1865 is by Lavers and Barraud. The prettily
painted chancel roof is by F.C.Eden.

St James the Great, Dauntsey

St James the Great, Dauntsey

Situated by the River Avon, the Grade 1 church has Norman foundations and was enlarged in the 14th century. The tower is 17th century. Inside there is a
tomb to the first Earl in the Danby Chapel, other monuments, Jacobean box pews and screen, medieval stained glass fragments and a remarkable recently restored “Doom” painting.
