Our first church tour of the year will take place on Friday 19 May and will feature churches in the Devizes area.  We are very fortunate to have local resident and lecturer David Evans to lead it.  The proposed itinerary is:
10.30     St Cyriac, Lacock, SN15 2LB
” Magnificent ” (Shell Guide); Perpendicular church with transepts of c 1300; very ornate north east Lady Chapel of c 1430 with pendant vault; Sharington monument of 1566 with coloured bosses – “one of the finest pieces of mid-16thc decoration in England” (Pevsner)
11.15    St Nicholas, Bromham, SN15 2EU
Cruciform; Victorianised Early English chancel; Perpendicular; the glory of the church is the elaborate south chapel of 1492, now the Baynton chapel; east window of 1870 by Morris from Burne-Jones cartoons; Tom Moore, the poet, is buried in the churchyard.
12.00     St Mary, Devizes, SN10 1DS
Norman chancel, but the rest Perpendicular; 1761 monument of John Garth; medieval statue of Our Lady above chancel; redundant 2007 and future uncertain.

One of the finest in the county; major Norman church although externally mostly Perpendicular; Norman tower; zigzag arches in chancel; groined vaulting; ornate 15thc Beauchamp chapel; glass by Hardman , Kempe , Willement; monuments including two by the Westmacotts.
3.00    St Michael, Urchfont, SN10 4QT
Mainly Decorated with Perpendicular cruciform tower; imposing carved rib-vaulted stone chancel; chancel arch Early English; 13thc font; Wailes glass in chancel;” There is a terrible Victorian east window of Christ appearing to dance the twist“ (Jenkins) ; 18thc monuments including one by Scheemakers to Robert Tothill.
