Our next tour will be led by Edward Buchan on Saturday 18 May and will cover churches in the Malmesbury area. Edward has put together a mouth-watering collection of Grade 1 gems and has kindly arranged tea at his home to round off the day.

10.30 a.m. St Mary Magdalene, Hullavington
Mainly early 13thc except tower by Blomfield. Fine late 13thc N chapel. 17thc panel of sacrifice of Isaac. 17thc & 18thc monuments. Grade I.
11.30 a.m. Holy Cross, Sherston
* Described as “splendid ” by the Shell Guide ; Gothic tower of 1730 ; church Norman and Early English ; 13thc chancel drastically restored by Ewan Christian ; Jacobean pulpit ; monuments 13th – 19thc . Grade I.
12.15 p.m. Foxley (no dedication)
Mainly EE with unusual T shaped interior, Jacobean pews and 18thc reredos. 1722 monument to George Aycliffe. 1901 window after G F Watts. Grade I. Nearby mortuary chapel at Cowage Farm, former church of Bremilham, claims to be the smallest church in England just 12 ft square and 1 pew.
1.00 p.m. Lunch at The Old Bell Hotel, Malmesbury SN16 0BW. Est. 1220.
2.00 p.m. Malmesbury Abbey, St Peter & St Paul * * * “One of Wiltshire’s glorious churches” (Woodruffe) 7thc abbatial foundation of St Aldhelm; only nave survived the Reformation; half Norman west front survives; Pevsner: “ The South Porch is the chef d’oeuvre of Malmesbury , among the best pieces of Norman sculpture in England .” ; tympanum of Christ in Glory ; vaulted roof with painted bosses and heads; Perpendicular tomb chest of King Athelstan ; Burne – Jones window . Grade I.
3.00 p.m. Holy Rood, Rodbourne
Norman s. doorway with undamaged Tree of Life in tympanum; 19thc tower with fine saddleback roof; early Wm Morris glass in E window
3.45pm Tea at Southsea Farm, Kington Langley SN15 5PB
