St Martin, Fifield Bavant, a tiny medieval church in a good hillside setting

1/ ST MARY, DONHEAD01_Donhead

The Grade 1 church was built mainly in the 12th and 13th centuries although
the tower is Perpendicular. The font and the arcades are Romanesque. There
are wall tablets and stained glass to be seen. Note the monument to an exiled
French Carthusian of 1798.

2/ ST MARY, EAST KNOYLE02_East Knoyle

This Grade 1 church is of Norman foundation. The tower is Perpendicular. It
is full of interesting things. The unique plaster decoration of the chancel was
devised in 1639 by the then rector who was the father of Christopher Wren.
The lapis lazuli reredos is by Blomfield. There is an excellent east window by
Sir Ninian Comper in memory of George Wyndham of Clouds.

3/ ST JOHN BAPTIST, TISBURY03_Tisbury

The large cruciform Grade 1 church has an 18th century tower. Note the
nave wagon roof with its horizontal angels. There is a Jacobean pulpit
together with Jacobean pews. In the chancel are to be found various memorials
to the Catholic Arundells of Wardour Castle.

4/ ST MICHAEL and ALL ANGELS, TEFFONT EVIAS04_Teffont Evias

The church is of 1824-6 by Charles Fowler with a later spire by Scott. It
contains 16th century Ley monuments, sgraffito work by Baron de Triqueti of
1863 and a selection of imported medieval glass.

5/ ST JAMES, ANSTY06_Ansty

The church was built c 1230 by the Knights Hospitallers of St John of
Jerusalem. There are 17th century stalls possibly from Salisbury Cathedral.
The font is Norman, and there is delicately engraved glass by David Peace.

6/ ST MARY, ALVEDISTON07_Alvediston

The church is situated in a quiet spot above the River Ebble. The tower is
Perpendicular but the rest is by T.H.Wyatt from 1866. There are good 17th
and 18th century monuments to the Wyndhams including one by Rysbrack.
Sir Anthony Eden, Earl of Avon, is buried in the churchyard.

This tiny medieval church in a good hillside setting is entered through a
farmyard. It is built in flint and stone, with a good 20th century tower.

8/ ALL SAINTS, BROAD CHALKE09_Broadchalke

This Grade 1 cruciform church is mainly 14th century although the windows
are Perpendicular and the tower 16th century. The chancel is earlier. Sir Cecil
Beaton is buried in the churchyard.

9/ ST JOHN BAPTIST, BISHOPSTONEtrail3_Bishopstone_new

This church is also Grade 1. It is set slightly above the meadows of the River
Ebble. The big cruciform church is mainly Decorated with exquisite reticulated
window tracery. High quality craftmanship is also evident in the rib vaulting of
the chancel. There is much re-assembled woodwork including the pulpit and
a Gothic tomb chest and canopy by Pugin for the Rev George Augustus
Montgomery obit 1842.

10/ ST MARY and ST LAWRENCE, STRATFORD TONY11_Stratford_tony

This Grade 1 church is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It has
a delightful setting above the River Ebble. The tower and chancel are
medieval but the nave was rebuilt in the 18th century. Inside there is a fine set
of late 17th century stalls and pews together with a Kempe window.

11/ ST MARY, DINTON05_Dinton

The cruciform church is Grade 1 and backs onto Dinton Park . It is mainly
Decorated with reticulated window tracery. The church was restored by
Butterfield. There is a Norman font and good monuments to the Wyndham
family.
